He Wants You To Change
Christopher Ng thinks you are boring. Now, before you beat the hell out of him or tear out his hair, allow him to explain. The Malaysian hairstylist, who came to Singapore from Kuala Lumpur when he was very young, realizes that Singaporeans are very conservative, but feels they've allowed it to go to their heads. Yes, we're well-groomed, our hair is always in place, but one thing about us irks him. Christopher, who is so soft-spoken you'd think he is shy or aloof if you didn't already know him, says quietly: "Almost everyone has the same hairstyle. The guys will have one kind of look, and the girls will have one kind of look, it is so boring," he sighs. So he thinks the people from Kuala Lumpur are more exciting to look at? "Well, the thing about them is they're a lot more adventurous, so there's a lot more variety, and so it is, in a way, more exciting to look at them, even if they don't always get it right."
In The Beginning
Christopher had always wanted to be a hairstylist, having seen friends gone into the profession, and was blessed with a family who have always supported his decision to pursue his dream of becoming a hairstylist. "I think service is very important. You have to be patient with your client, and make sure he or she is comfortable. While I may like to change the way a person looks, I will need to explain before that exactly what I am about to do. They have to be happy, they are not my lab experiment," says the 26-year-old.
Hair Rescue
Apart from turning boring hairstyles into exciting ones, Christopher also feels that he feels happy whenever he gets the chance to 'repair' a badly done job. "I've seen customers coming in with their hair damaged from a visit to a different salon, and I've also seen people coming in with hairstyles that totally do not suit them" says Christopher. "What I enjoy doing is to save them from the damage done," he says. Take the case of the girl who came in with her hair horribly damaged by bleaching, colouring and whatever her former hairstylist unleashed on her. "It took about four visits over a couple of weeks, but I succeeded in helping her undo the damage. The look on her face when we were done was really quite special, and to me, that was priceless."
Change Is Good For You
Change, for him, is something that makes life worth living. "I like to change the way people look. Mind you, not to shock them, but to give then something more interesting to live for," he says. So if you're bored with the way you look, you know just who to call. |
